Some people might write a bucketlist. But a list of “I hope I get to”s does not get close to the program I want for my life.
In an attempt to get my head and heart around this, I wrote “a smaller rule”. It is a sort of set of proverbs, or maybe nuggets of direction, 19 in number, that I wrote to give myself a structure that I could work from for my process of life. It is very compact, the nineteen thoughts fitting on just a very few pages.
After I wrote it and lived with it for a little while, it seemed that it might be useful to others as well.
I do not claim expert knowledge in this! But maybe it could help someone in developing their own personal rule of life.
So, taking a deep breath, I printed and constructed a few to share. They are spiral bound, about 5-1/2″ wide by 6-5/8″ high, with laminated covers. Bound with the text of the “smaller rule” is a poem I wrote about silence, and around 90 blank leaves, that could be used for journaling or sketching. The paper is a very high quality 28# stock and brilliant white. The method of making the covers is still an act in process. As time goes on, my hope is that I can come up with an improved and tougher version of the covers – but as for now, this will do, and they do look very nice.
And if you should find it useful, after you’ve filled it up, bring it back to me and I’ll rebind it for you (for the cost of materials), with fresh leaves.
In keeping with Chapter 57 of the Rule of Benedict (a larger Rule – see Tools of Formation), “The evil avarice must have no part in establishing prices, which should, therefore, always be a little lower than people outside the monastery are able to set, so that in all things God may be glorified (1 Peter 4:11)”, I’m setting the price at $15(US), plus whatever packing and shipping comes to.
There are only a few but if it turns out there is a greater demand, I’ll make more.
My sophistication at setting up a on-line store is non-existent, so if you’d like one, or would like more information, drop me a line at “heidi at littleyggdrasil dot org” (<<you know what to do) and we’ll figure this out together.
Thanks!
